A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE

by Roy Andersson

France/Germany/Norway/Sweden, 2014, 99 min., colour

Like modern times' Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Sam and Jonathan, two travelling salesmen peddling novelty items, take us on a kaleidoscopic wandering through human destinies. A trip that shows us the beauty of single moments, the pettiness of others, the humor and tragedy that is in us, life’s grandeur as well as frailty of humanity

Reviews

"The full five stars (...) hilarious deadpan Scandic-Surreal genius. Cinematography in another dimension"
Kate Muir, THE TIMES

"A magnificently droll, compassionate, melancholic reflection on the absurd human comedy (...) a sad comic couple of novelty-item salesmen who give A PIGEON a narrative backbone and represent one of Andersson's greatest character creations to date. They look sure to take their place in the pantheon of comedy double acts, somewhere between Laurel and Hardy and Vladimir and Estragon out of Waiting For Godot"
Lee Marshall, SCREEN INTERNATIONAL

"Glorious metaphysical burlesque (...) a brilliantly distinctive film that no one else could have made (...) What a bold, beguiling and utterly unclassifiable director Andersson is. He thinks life is a comedy and feels it's a tragedy, and is able to wrestle these conflicting impulses into a gorgeous, deadpan deadlock"
Xan Brooks, THE GUARDIAN
