The death of Mr. Lazarescu

by Cristi Puiu

Romania, 2005, 148', colour

One night Mr. Lazarescu feels unwell. The doctors remain cool and obstinate while he leaves for an incongruous medical odyssey.

Reviews

"Holds you breathless for two and a half hours. (...) An impressive experience."
Florence Colombani et Thomas Sotinel, LE MONDE

"A truly remarkable film characterised by moments of black comedy and an awful, slow-burning momentum rarely seen in cinema. (...) A truly original piece of cinema."
Wendy Ire, THE TIMES

"Shot through with biting humor and filmed with quasi-documentary intimacy, this affecting story depicts a society that, in its inability to tend to its weakest members, betrays its own ill health, which sounds awfully familiar."
Manohla Dargis, NEW YORK TIMES

"A tour de force."
Jim Hoberman, VILLAGE VOICE

"An offering from a filmmaker of rare integrity. To be watched again, soon!"
Philippe Azoury, LIBERATION

"The American Medical Assn. would have a gastric rupture if such a critical document were delivered by a U.S. filmmaker."
Duane Byrge, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"Excellent throughout, the dialogue and mise en scène frighteningly true to life."
TIME OUT LONDON

"A brilliant work entirely unlike any other. (...) A terribly powerful vision of the human condition."
Frédéric Strauss, TELERAMA

"A film that blazes all whistles blowing with speediness, efficiency and incredible elegance to an alcoholics paradise. (...) Extraordinarily generous. Of an extravagance thought long gone."
Edouard Launet, CAHIERS DU CINEMA

"Magnificently damning critique on healthcare (...) done with a devil’s sense of humor."
Aaron Hillis, PREMIERE

"You're filled with hope when you leave the theatre. A dark existential comedy. THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU is rooted in the theater of the absurd and theater of cruelty. Despite a running time of 154 minutes, you'll find yourself riveted to the screen."
Emmanuel Levy, EMMANUELLEVY.COM
